Ramadan is one of the most important months in the Islamic calendar. It is a time of fasting, prayer, and reflection for Muslims across the world.

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic lunar calendar. All over the world this month is considered one of the most sacred month of the year for Muslims. There is no fixed date for Ramdan.

Due to the lunar calendar’s origin, the Islamic lunar calendar is shifted every year by 10-11 days in accordance with the Gregorian calendar due to the lunar cycle.

Facts about Ramdan

1. Ramdan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. The 5 pillars of Islam are key practices that Muslim’s should follow. The other four pillars are Salat, Shahada, Zakat, and Hajj.

2. This is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar. The time of fasting between sunrise and sunset.

3. During this month Muslims fast. Muslims don’t eat or drink anything during the hours of daylight. This is called fasting.

Not all Muslims have to fast. For example if you are pregnant, unwell you do not need to fast. You should only fast if you feel better.

4. The dates of Ramadan change every year. This is because the Islamic calendar is based on the moon cycle.

In the year 2023, Ramadan starts from the evening of Thursday 23 March in India.

5. During the month of Ramadan, many people decide to donate to charity.

6. The Qur’an is the Islamic holy book. The actual night that the Qur’an was revealed is a night known as Lailut ul-Qadr (‘The Night of Power’).

7. The end of Ramadan is celebrated with a big celebration called ‘Eid ul-Fitr’. During Eid ul-Fitr Muslims meets their family, friends, give gifts and give thanks to their god, Allah.

8. The practice of fasting during Ramadan began in the year 624 CE.
