Voter ID Card – Guide for How to apply?

Voter ID Card is an identity document for Indian citizens. Voting ID can also be called an Elector’s Photo Identity Card (EPIC). Voter ID can be used as an identity proof for voting in municipality, state and national elections in India. Read further to How to apply for Voter Card?

Voter ID was first introduced in 1993 during the tenure of Chief Election Commissioner TN Session. The state government of India introduced online and offline application facilities for election voter ID in India.

Benefits of Voter ID Card

  1. Voting ID Card can be used as proof of address and identity
  2. It signifies that the person is a registered voter id card
  3. It is useful to avail of several government schemes
  4. It can also be used to generate or update for an Aadhar card, general identity, address and age proof

Eligibility Criteria for Voter ID

  1. Applicant must be Indian citizen
  2. Applicant must be at least 18 years of age and above
  3. Person should have permanent address

Important Documents Required

  1. Recent passport-sized photographs
  2. Documents for age proof (any one of the following)
    • Passport
    • Aadhaar card
    • PAN card
    • Driving licence
  3. Residential proof (any one of the following)
    • Ration card
    • Aadhaar card
    • Bank passbook
    • Electricity or phone bill

Apply Process for New Voter – Online

  1. Visit the Official Website. https://voters.eci.gov.in
  2. Click on “Form 6 – Apply Online for New Voter ID Card”
  3. Fill online Form 6 with required details. Enter accurate information like your name, address, date of birth and other necessary details. (Be sure to double-check the information before submitting the form.)
  4. Upload the required documents as per the instructions given on the website
  5. Once you have filled the form and uploaded the required documents, click on the “Submit” button to submit your application
  6. After that you will get an Application Reference Number. Make sure to note down it for future use

User can track the status of application by clicking on the “Track Application Status” link on the official website. Enter your application reference number to check the progress of your application.

Later The Electoral Registration Officer will review your application and conduct a verification process. They may also visit your residence for physical verification if required.

Once application is approved and verified, the Election Commission will issue a Voter ID in your name. The Voter card will be sent through post to your registered address.

Offline Process of Voter ID

  1. Visit the nearest Electoral Registration Office (ERO) or Voter Facilitation Center (VFC) in your constituency. Request Form 6, which is the Application Form for New Voter ID Card. You can also download the form from the official website of the Election Commission of India.
  2. Fill Form 6 with the required details. Provide accurate information like your name, address, date of birth and other required details. Be sure to double-check the information before submitting the form.
  3. Attach the required documents along with the filled Form 6. Commonly required documents include proof of age (birth certificate, school certificate, etc.) and proof of residence (passport, driving license, utility bill, etc.). For a complete list of accepted documents check the instructions given on the form or website of the Election Commission.
  4. Submit the completed form and attached documents to the designated officers at the Electoral Registration Office or Voter Facilitation Centre. They will provide an acknowledgment receipt.
  5. The Electoral Registration Officer will review your application and conduct a verification process. They can also come to your residence for physical verification, if required.
  6. Once your application is approved and verified, the Election Commission will issue a voter ID card in your name. The card will be sent through post to your registered address.
