INS Arihant missile test – Fires Successful

INS Arihant is S2 Strategic Strike Nuclear Submarine, India fired a ballistic missile from its first nuclear submarine Arihant successfully.

It is first deployed operationally in 2018. INS Arihant has the ability to fire nuclear-tipped missiles from land, air and sea. INS Arihant is the first indigenously developed nuclear submarine with Indian Navy.

History of INS Arihant

The submarine was sanctioned in late 1970’s by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi using secrete funds. Later design and technology was finalized in 1984. Actual work started on the submarine in 1998.

Arihant was launched on July 26, 2009 by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the anniversary of Vijay Diwas (Kargil War victory day). The submarine’s atomic reactor was activated in August 2013.

Finally, in August 2016, PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the submarine into the Indian Navy. It has 6,000-tonne of weight with length of 110 meters and breadth 11 meters. The vessel will be able to carry 12 Sagarika K 15 Missiles which have range of 700 km.

On the day October 14, 2022, India fired a ballistic missile from its first nuclear submarine Arihant successfully in Bay of Bengal with “very high accuracy”.
